Why is it that I always forget to take photos at events like exhibits or in this case a meaningful studio visit with watercolor artist Laura Poulette. She came with her supplies and we set about painting together. It was a grey rainy day so I moved the table to the lightest area by the west window which was adequate for seeing our materials. It was perfect for the nonstop conversation but I forgot to take time for photography. It was “being in the present moment” at its best.
Later I realized the missed opportunity, and took a shot of the studio corner formerly occupied by us and the table top, littered by paints, paintings and pallets. Also, I took a photograph of a mini bouquet of tulips and arugula she brought in a jam jar with its lid saucer for future use. She shared a sample of Daniel Smith pigment, Graphite Grey. After she left, and inspired by her botanical focus, I used that paint in a quick watercolor sketch.
It was an artist date filled with all the best ingredients. Our lunch was sandwiched in between topics: our favorite brushes and paper, brands of preferred paints, recent and upcoming projects, gardening, home building, educational pursuits, art business, all this the tip of the iceberg.
Laura can render botanicals she sees in the wild, like from her residency at the Bernheim Forrest and her homestead, with acute accuracy. Watching her layer the colors on holly berries gave me a broader understanding of developing form. She helped me see where I needed more contrast with the hummingbirds I was working on.
It was insightful for me to get feedback about my latest gift idea, Candy Boxes. I think this eye candy idea is great, but is it just me? She was super thrilled with the Candy Boxes and I hope open studio visitors have the same response.
I want to have more times like this! If you are inclined to sign up for a studio visit, you may want to extend the time to include painting together or to have some mentoring with me.
Kathleen, I also realized too late photos of our visit would have been a good idea! I’m charmed by your tulip painting. Thank you again for a stimulating and encouraging visit!
Laura, the only solution is to rinse and repeat! I thought of more things I could have discussed with and learned from you.
