Finding Purpose

 guest post~by Fox Hutt

Over the years the first person I think of to call with gardening question that will be answered from a holistic perspective is Fox Hutt. She kindly shares some of her philosophy here, and in a few weeks at the next Sunwise Celebrations event “Spiritual Gardening”.

“You and your purpose in life are the same thing. Your purpose is to be you.”

 ~George Alexiou

Being of like mind with Mr. Alexiou, I am glad that a good share of my purpose in this incarnation is being “me” while in my garden. A lovely rain shower just brought me in from my flowers and vegetables where I once again felt that wonderful deep sigh, that release that comes when I stand up from my work and look across my garden and pond at the radiant vital beauty around me, and know Satchitananda, which, in Sanskrit means “Awareness of Being is Bliss.” (more…)

You Are Welcome to Visit the Elemental Shrines During Sunwise Celebrations

For each of the four seasons we invite you to celebrate the essence of the season, Sunwise Celebrations, with an event that will inspire a deeper connection with the earth and your creativity. Last winter we dedicated  shrines to each of the four elements as places for contemplation. The winter was long, but quite beautiful for photographing them.  (more…)

Gourd Rattles for Shamanic Journeywork

Gourd Rattles for Shamanic Journeywork

In the Talismans exhibit, there are four gourd rattles for shamanic journey work. This Saturday I am bringing some rattles from my collection to the gallery to show you. Rattles are an ancient healing instrument used to clear energy in a space or around a person’s body. The sound inside the gourd imitates the sound of rain, a cleansing element. Other materials are sometimes used in making rattles, like rawhide and turtle shells. Traditionally they are associated with the season winter, and the direction north. (more…)

Video of the Show, “Talisman for Going On”

Click here to watch a two minute video of the Talismans exhibit that opened last week and continues until April 18. If at all possible see it in person, because the subtleties are hard to make out online, like in Talismans for Going On. As is the case with this piece, sometimes I create something  to see that encourages me to go on creating. This large collage developed over a six month period. (more…)

4 New Watery Talismans

4 New Watery Talismans

All the snow and now torrential rain has put me in the mood to create four new watery talismans for the exhibit (reception March 20). The Talisman for Water was first pictured with the watercolor background in this post. The rainbow was added as a hopeful reminder that eventually precipitation does stop. (more…)

In Light of the Snow, Guest Post by Greg Orth

The recent snowstorms brought the expected challenges, but it surprisingly also brought light, bright, evenly diffused light from all directions. As the builder of the studio, I had hoped to bring in light from as many directions as possible, even bouncing it off of the cathedral ceiling, yet I had not imagined the effect snow would have. Some New Earthy Talismans, Erin go bragh

In the studio, I have been making some new earthy talismans, to premier at the Talismans exhibit in ten short days. It’s been a wild ride to get the original work completed, photographed, documented, shared, I could go on and on about the crazy art business.  (more…)

Snowed In, Getting So Much Done for “Talismans” Exhibit

Snowed In, Getting So Much Done for “Talismans” Exhibit

I have to admit, I love getting snowed in. It helps me focus on getting so much done for the Talismans exhibit opening March 15. Having a fire in the wood-stove and my husband home for days on end made it an extended Valentines week. As I write this, our 1/4 mile driveway is still impassible. My husband, on his favorite toy, mowed the drifts (my idea, since we do not have a plow) His car got out to the end of the driveway before it drifted over again. A few days later he delivered  a cheerful bouquet by tractor. (more…)
