Even though it is more than two months from the Day Out of Time and beginning of winter, I find myself remembering when I first created the art in 2004, commemorating the day. It most have been the heat of the summer that compelled me to find that piece again and see how I would adjust it to my recent style. It is all about musing of the seasons and being present with the daily shifts in light and temperature.
The original piece was a part of the 4 Seasons ~ 4 Directions series, in the winter ~ north section. I associate the color white with winter. Mistletoe is the plant associated with the Day Out of Time, December 23, the Celtic Tree Calendars’ accounting for the extra day of the year. The new year began the next day with the Birch Tree Month, and winter had begun around the 21st.
The inspiration came from journal art board pages from the past two years. For its upgrade, I tore the 24×12” piece on Khadi paper into three parts with the intention to only keep the petals and the white tone.
I imagined soaring over places on this day. I chose maps and images from a nineteenth century encyclopedia. I idea was to obscure these images as if looking through snow.
After many layers of whites and off-whites this is the end result, which you can see for the first time at the 17th Annual Autumn Open Studio.
