‘Vesuvian Gardens” is my 2025 Creative Visionary Program series of four paintings. Its meaning and importance emerged only after I had completed them.
It began by painting flowing lines that to me represent pathways. The previous paintings from the season were leading in this direction. Soon into the process the paintings took control. I was left in the dust to continue despite my dislike. Especially with the third one, where the path seemed hidden.
The chaos and violence of the outside world was creeping into the solace of the studio. It became a matter of principle to superimpose some sense of natural serenity. Adding the birds achieved this, though I noticed it reminded me of worn frescoes I’d seen in Pompeii as a child.
The dark tone of the third one made me determined to understand its mystery. There was a triangular rise on what had become a horizon that reminded me of Vesuvius. The triangle is a shape symbolic of home and safety for me, as well as mountain and strength.
Emerging from distant memory, was the view from our balcony across the Bay of Naples to Vesuvius. Seeing the rubble from the war when we ventured out to the markets was unsettling, even though we had Ada as our companion. When grandpa took me up to Vesuvius, it was mighty fearsome, especially the smell. But he was holding my hand, I was safe.
The fourth panel is about going to up there with grandpa, on the volcanic red path, facing fear together, I belonged with him.
I think that’s when I realized the theme of this year’s Open Studio would be belonging, where they will be on display for the first time.

Calming, peaceful, deep memories. I share your views of triangles. And thanks for sharing your steps in the process of each.
Thank you, Rebecca. I really enjoy mapping the progress as I paint. It helps me to know where I am going with the creative process.
Love these!!🌺
Thank you, Helene
