Well Hung, Drawn to the Earth

Well Hung, Drawn to the Earth

Monday, it was time to install “Drawn to the Earth” at MS Rezny Studio/Gallery. Honestly, I like things that are well hung, but it’s not my favorite thing to hang an exhibit. Fortunately, I had expert help from my husband and Mary Rezny. It became simpler when we learned to mark a line at 60″ with a string, which became the midpoint for all the pieces, no matter their size. It also helps to have a scale model as a starting point. Drawn to the Earth, Like a Bird

Drawn to the Earth, Like a Bird

All 30 pieces of my art for the Drawn to the Earth exhibit are ready to hang. As these visionary maps unfolded in my mind, I came to see them as a bird would. My longtime love of drawing and painting birds truly gave me a bird’s-eye perspective of the series. And yesterday, for the Equinox, we embedded tiny seeds in the freshly amended soil outside the studio, hoping the birds would spare them, even though the insects probably won’t. (By the way, we spread diatomaceous earth in the planting zones to handle insect pests.) (more…)

Spring Shows Up, Almost

Spring Shows Up, Almost

Spring Shows Up, Almost

Spring shows up in the most deliciously distracting ways on the farm. My next show, Drawn to the Earth, is almost ready to hang, but there are still many small logistical To-Do’s on my list. Meanwhile, the spring birds are coming back in full song. If I open the window to hear the Robin song, the Bluebird song, the Red-Winged Blackbird song, I’m drawn out the door and into their world, away from my hectic studio tasks and checklists. (more…)

Stan Brunn, Drawn to the Earth

Stan Brunn, Drawn to the Earth

Last week, Stan Brunn visited the studio to explore my artwork and select his most relevant geopoetry for our joint Drawn to the Earth exhibit that opens March 29th at the MS Rezny Studio/Gallery, in Lexington, Kentucky. His visit was enriching for me as I got to hear Stan’s insightful responses to my art – and he truly sees rather than merely looking. (more…)

Celebrating Mid-Winter, Studio Update

Usually winter is a slow time but not so this year. Well the snow storm has slowed things, but otherwise there’s been a lot of good energy happening in the studio, that I’d like to share in this mid-season studio update. This is another favorite time of year,  when we see the first signs of spring, Imbolc, Candlemas, Ground Hog Day! (more…)

Gratitude for the Kentucky Arts Council

Gratitude for the Kentucky Arts Council

Gratitude for the Kentucky Arts Council

Last week Wilma Brown, KAC Board member, wrote saying: “I have news that is almost unbelievable.  Although not official, the word in the state is that Governor Bevin has eliminated Kentucky Arts Council from his budget, which will be made public Tuesday. This means that Kentucky Arts Council as we know it will be abolished and the emphasis on arts in Kentucky will change drastically, especially in the funding of all previous programs and partnerships.”  Yes, for me it is unbelievable. Tomorrow will be the announcement.** This morning I woke up wondering where, as an artist, I would be without the support I have received over the past twelve years. without the past fifty years of support, what would the state of cultural heritage look like today. Celebrating Mid-Autumn, Studio Update

As of the Mid-Summer studio update, I thought things were settling down, but things have been busier than ever with art coming and going from the studio, there is a lot to share in this mid-season studio update. We are so grateful that the hard work of summer is behind us, our gardens fed us well, our milkweed has created a butterfly sanctuary. This is a favorite time of year, the time when we can slow down and count our blessings, Samhuin, the night of the Ancestors, is just past.
