Why I Love to Open My Studio

Why I Love to Open My Studio

Why I Love to Open My Studio

Why I love to open my studio can be said in one word, you. After so much time spent alone creating, dreaming, scheming and sharing art online, to have the fresh energy of you entering into a realm I’ve designed to bring a smile to your face completes the circle of creativity. There’s a lot in it for me like the satisfaction of connecting aesthetically, warmly, and hearing you tell me what my art is. Like “complex simplicity”. Yes! I’d been trying to put my finger on that. Celebrating Mid-Autumn, Studio Update

Celebrating Mid-Autumn, Studio Update

As of the Mid-Summer studio update, I thought things were settling down, but things have been busier than ever with art coming and going from the studio, there is a lot to share in this mid-season studio update. We are so grateful that the hard work of summer is behind us, our gardens fed us well, our milkweed has created a butterfly sanctuary. This is a favorite time of year, the time when we can slow down and count our blessings, Samhuin, the night of the Ancestors, is just past. A Magical Evening in the Studio

A Magical Evening in the Studio

A Magical Evening in the Studio

Yesterday I started three new paintings, and finished a few. It’s an understatement to say it was a more productive day than it has been lately. As I sat in the setting sun light observing them I was filled with a grateful feeling that comes from just sitting, and being with what did not exist a few hours before. Sitting in the wonder of what will come on the next layers. So I indulged myself with taking a studio tour of what I can see from my chair in the beautiful light. (more…)

In Light of the Snow, guest post by Greg Orth

In Light of the Snow, Guest Post by Greg Orth

The recent snowstorms brought the expected challenges, but it surprisingly also brought light, bright, evenly diffused light from all directions. As the builder of the studio, I had hoped to bring in light from as many directions as possible, even bouncing it off of the cathedral ceiling, yet I had not imagined the effect snow would have. Laverne Zabielski’s “Talisman for Ageing Gracefully”

Laverne Zabielski’s “Talisman for Ageing Gracefully”

It was an honor to welcome Laverne Zabielski to the studio for Open Studios. We’ve been wanting to visit each other, but  a two hour drive involves planning. It is meaningful when a fellow artist wants to buy a piece. She said, “I love how you suggested that we consider pieces of your work that speak to us.  I looked at everything in your studio. They were all beautiful.  It was when I read the title of the piece that you made from my fabric, Talisman for Aging Gracefully that I knew it was for me.”   (more…)

“Talisman for Painters”, a favorite beaded artifact

“Talisman for Painters”, a favorite beaded artifact

Well, “Talisman for Painters”, a favorite beaded artifact, has a new home, sold at the Open Studio. For a few years I could not part with it, I think because it was a paint brush from when we first built our house. The dried green paint on the brush was the first color of our outdoor window trim. Maybe I had to hold on to it to prove we completed the hardest task of our life. Like a diploma. (more…)

Each “Talisman” Finds Its Right Person & Place

Each “Talisman” Finds Its Right Person & Place

My biggest pleasure is connecting a person with the art they need in their life. When I create something there is an inner knowing that it is for a certain person. This is my purpose as an artist, to bring happiness. I think happiness shows on the lovely Lauren Higdon‘s face. She chose “Talisman for Centering” for some  personal reasons, and some that make perfect sense. Like the fact that she is  the founder of Centered, Lexington Kentucky’ s Holistic Community Center, dedicated to inspiring, educating and supporting our world through the moving, visual and healing arts.

6th Annual Open Studio ARTTOUR was wonderful

6th Annual Open Studio ARTTOUR was wonderful

Despite an unseasonable snow storm, the turnout for the 6th Annual Open Studio ARTTOUR was wonderful. Thank you all for coming to my and the other studios. There was a steady stream of tourists, a validation of the need for art events in rural areas. As promised, I made a short video that you can see on the event page. It was shot in haste Friday evening just as the sun was setting, the only sun beam we saw that day. It took longer than usual to set up.
